David Margolies award-winning play begins with Ruth Steiner, a prominent author of short stories, who lives a comfortable life in Greenwich Village.  She encounters Lisa Morrison, a graduate student, who also happens to be an aspiring writer.  Morrison offers to become Ruth’s assistant.  Lisa, a child of suburban privilege, is enamored of Ruth, and Ruth, who feels an affinity for the eager young acolyte, is only too happy to weave her palpable spell on Lisa.   Ruth enthralls her protégé with tales of the ‘beat generation” ensconced in Greenwich Village in the 1950’s.  She also relates to Lisa, memories of her affair with the famous poet, Delmore Schwartz.  This confessional will prove to be integral to Ruth and Lisa’s future association.

Spanning six years, the play chronicles the pair’s tumultuous relationship:  first as master and disciple, then as colleagues and friends, and finally devolving into completive jealousies, professional rivalries, and charges of artistic betrayal.

Though specific in time, Collected Stories possesses universal themes.  The play has not only been produced in the U.S., but in cities such as: Warsaw, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Sao Paolo.  InPlay’s production will involve an all African-American cast.  Frances E. Farah directs, Sherri Roulette Mosely plays Ruth, and Donette Coleman-Reese portrays Lisa.

Ticket prices at the door are $10 during the first week of previews and $15.00 thereafter.  Reservations may be made by calling 816-765-5767.  Group rates are also available with reservations.
